Welcome to Ramnivas Ruia Jr. College

Welcome to Ramnivas Ruia Junior College

Ramnivas Ruia Junior College, which celebrated its Silver Jubilee on the eve of the new millenium (2000-01), had its inception in July 1975, when the State of Maharashtra adopted the 10+2+3 pattern following the recommendations of the Kothari Education Commission (1964-66). It was started as a separate administrative unit in the same premises of its parent institution, Ramnarain Ruia College (estd. 1937), which has the distinctive privilege of being one of the 31 institutions run by the prestigious private educational society in Maharashtra, the Shikshana Prasaraka Mandali (Pune), the seventh college in Mumbai after Elphinstone College (1856), Wilson College (1861), St. Xavier's College (1868), Sydenham College (1913), Institute of Science (1924) and Ismail Yusuf College (1930), and the first private college in the city.

Following the introduction of new courses at the +3 stage (Degree College), expansion of various existing departments and laboratories and consequent phenomenal growth in its student strength, need for more physical space culminated in the erection of a new building, alongside the old building, for the Junior College which was inaugurated on 29th February, 1996. However, in the larger interest of a healthy academic atmosphere, for staff and students alike, the physical separation of the +2 and +3 stages was considered inadvisable. Accordingly, all the curricular and co-curricular activities of the Degree and Junior Colleges are spread over both the buildings.

The new building houses the two Junior College department of Computer Science, and also the Microbiology Department, Biochemistry Department, the Information Technology Centre and the modern laboratories of Bioanlytical Chemistry  of the Degree College as well as Slum Studies Centre. While the State Department of Education likes to look at a Junior College as a featureless conglomoration of different subject teachers, the co-existence of the +2 and +3 stages in our College has given the Junior College an internal structure and a sense of belonging to respective full-fledged departements. This gives the College a lively intellectual and academic atmosphere in which progressive ideas can thrive. The motivated students get a glimpse of advanced basic and applied research, and a corridor for interaction.

The mother tongue is the finest medium of instruction that could be made available to students. The import of the language and culture of the land is echoed even in these days of globalization. Right from its inception, it has remained the policy of S. P. Mandali to establish the two languages of Marathi and Sanskrit. Ruia College boldly launched its Marathi medium unit in 1971, the first college in Mumbai to do so. The Faculty of Arts of the Junior College has an entire division with Marathi as the medium of instruction. This allows these students to participate very freely in the lectures, seminars, discussions and other co-curricular activities.

The Junior College offers courses in Electronics and Computer Science to students desirous of taking vocational subjects. Both the departments have excellent modern laboratories and extensive library of books. The Computer Lab has Windows NT IBM Pentium III Server with IBM Pentium IV at the nodes and offers one computer to each student. The department also offers value-added courses on softwares from time-to-time.
